HFNC stands for High Flow Nasal Cannula and it is used for delivering high volume of Oxygen into patients. They are very valuable for fighting Covid 19 by delivering high volume of oxygen to the patients. Number of studies proved the effectiveness of HFNC for keeping Covid patients away from entubation.
What is the need: Current HFNC masks leak lots of Oxygen into the environment. Apart from wasting precious Oxygen, it also creates fire hazard. A spark in one of the equipment may start a fire. Can we come up with a more comfortable HFNC mask that leaks less yet it is comfortable for the patient. It should also let patient talk, eat and drink while it should be adaptable to various nose types.
Solution: A new patented HFNC mask which delivers 30% more Oxygen to patient by gently adapting to nose of the patient. It is compact yet clings to nose gently by attaching to alar wings of the nose.
Status: Prototype ready, patent applied for.
Seeking: Partner to get necessary certifications and distribute the mask to global market.
The idea behind HFNC is to deliver maximum possible Oxygen to patient. HFNC may be simple nasal interface like the one on the left or it may look like the one on the right.
There are also mask types covering nose-mouth or the full face.
What is the innovation?
We started from scratch and designed a nasal interface which brings new concepts into HFNC mask design.
1. For one thing, the mask is articulated for best possible fit to patient’s nose. There are 12 different nose types of humans. Rather designing one-size-fits all, we designed something articulated so that it can be “configured” for a comfortable fit into the nose of the patient.
2. The new design gently opens up the nostrils via soft silicon inserts so that more Oxygen can be delivered through the nostrils.
3. The mask clings to nose through silicon covered prongs that presses alar wings of the patient’s nose toward the silicon nasal cones inside the nostrils. This way the nasal mask attaches itself to the nose in a gentle manner. Unlike other masks, even without a head strap it may stay in place.
